Police arrest two for vandalizing PHCN facilities in Ondo


The Police in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State, has arrested two persons in connection with the vandalization of equipment belonging to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria ( PHCN).
The two suspects; simply identified as Ojo Abiodun (21), and Oladiran Olawale (29), allegedly specialize on illegal business of selling electrical cables.


It was reliably gathered from sources at the station, that the two suspects were allegedly found in possession of the alleged stolen cable and other electrical materials which were said to have been removed from the 300KVA transformer installed in the agrarian community of Pele on the outskirt of Ondo town.
Their arrest was carried out by men from the Anti-Crime unit of the police division at about 6am yesterday at road 13 Funbi Fagun street, while making frantic effort at escaping with the loot in a Golf taxi cab painted in Ondo State colour with yellow and blue, marked Lagos EU 199 KRD .
Items alleged to have been found with the suspects include transformer winding coil, laminated cord, feeder pillar, laminating sheet as well as two 50-
litres of plastic jerry cans filled with transformer oil, all said to be the property of the PHCN.

Other items also said to have been recovered include several bottles of of liquor, pliers, knife, torchlight, spanner and a weedy substance suspected to be cannabis.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the place, Mr. Emmanuel Okorie, a Superintendent of Police ( SP), confirmed the arrest.
He added that investigation had commenced into the matter.
Okorie however stated that the suspects who are currently undergoing interrogation, would be arraigned in court, as soon as investigation
is concluded on the matter.

Meanwhile, the vehicle loaded with the alleged vandalized equipment and materials have been taken to the premises of the station as at the time of filing this report.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of PHCN in the state, Mr. Orghale Eduziare who reacted on this described it as unfortunate, adding that the organization had been witnessing several attacks on its facilities in the town for some years.
Eduziare, who commended the Police for apprehending some of the suspects, also charged them to go after others whom he said were still at large.
